Today's society places so much importance on productivity that it is easy to lose sight of the importance of sleep. While it might be beneficial in the short term to sacrifice sleep for work, the advantages of getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night will positively benefit your life in the long term.

The benefits of sleep go far beyond feeling well rested. Sleep is essential for overall health and well-being. During the deepest stages of sleep, our bodies repair and grow tissues, balance hormones, boost immune system function, and undergo processes essential to memory and learning.

Many factors can affect the amount of speep an individual receives each night. In addition to possible health factors, many of our daily habits can contribute to loss of sleep.

These are some of the actions we can take during the day in order to ensure that we receive maximum rest at night:

  • Avoid caffeine: Trade in that daily cup of coffee for a caffeine-free tea or natural fruit juice. Although caffeine might generate quick energy in the morning, it can actually be the cause of fatigue in the long run.

  • Avoid late night screens: Give your brain time to unwind before bed. Turn off any computer, tablet, TV, or cellphone an hour before bed in order to fall asleep faster and experience more restful sleep.
  • Developing a sleeping routine: Your body completes its most important recovery during the hours of 11:00pm to 1:00am. Design your routine to ensure sleep during these hours.
  • Create a proper sleeping environment: Make sure that you are sleeping on a mattress and pillows that provide proper support for your body, and arrange pillows so that the natural curve of the neck is not disturbed during the night. In addition, remove any light- producing electronics from your sleeping environment and have blinds that block light.
  • Receive regular chiropractic care:Many sleep issues can be helped with regular chiropractic care. It is common for patients to advise their chiropractor that they sleep much better after receiving a chiropractic adjustment. Often adjustments help to alleviate chronic pain problems that contribute to loss of sleep. Adjustments also help the body relax by relieving tension on the nervous system caused by misalignment of spinal vertebrae. This can help improve blood flow, calm depression and anxiety, control appetite, and boost the immune system.
