Chiropractic: A Safer Option for Senior Back Pain

Many studies have shown that chiropractic is a safe and effective tool for treating a variety of conditions including back pain, neck pain, and heaches. But, is this true even for seniors, a population particularly vulnerable to injury? A group of researchers sponsered by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine conducted a retrospective cohort study to find out if seniors' risk of physical injury to the head, neck or trunk following an office visit for chiropractic spinal manipulation was higher, lower or equal the risk of injury following an office visit to a primary care physician. Data was studied on Medicare B patients who visited the doctor in 2007 for a neuromusculoskeletal issue, evaluating their risk of injury seven days post treatment.

The study found that seniors that received chiropractic care had a 76% lower rate of injury within seven days of treatment when compared to the patients that met with their primary care physician. While more severe conditions require medical treatment, chiropractic is a safer and more effective treatment option for seniors experiencing back pain, neck pain and headaches as compared to conventional medicines such as painkillers that can lead to unpleasant side effects, addiction, and long term negative health consequences.
